What is Electrolysis

To date, electrolysis remains the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. The technique involves inserting a fine, hair sized probe into the follicle and delivering a minute current. This current destroys the root of the hair as well as the cells that cause regrowth. The hair is then removed with forceps.

Although it is impossible to predict the overall duration of treatment, multiple session will be needed. Individual hair follicles are most effectively destroyed by electrolysis when they are in the active growth phase of the hair growth cycle. Hairs that are in the resting stage may have to be treated more than once; and hairs that are not visible (dormant) at the time of treatment will require subsequent attention.

Health and Safety

This office follows the health and safety standards recommended by the American Electrology Association. These recommendations are compliant with infection control standards issued by the US Center for Disease Control.

Sterile, single use disposable probes are used with every treatment and properly disposed of at the end of each session.

Skin Care for Electrolysis

Caring for your skin appropriately before and after electrolysis treatment helps to promote healing and reduce the risk of any post treatment complications.

Electrolysis Pretreatment Instructions

1. Avoid sun exposure 48 hours prior to treatment.
2. Female clients may be more sensitive during or right before their menstrual cycle and may want to avoid scheduling an appointment during this time.
3. It is important to drink plenty of water the day before and the day of treatment. If your skin is hydrated, treatment will be more effective.
4. There are many topical anesthetic creams available. Products containing 5% Lidocaine are available without a prescription.
5. Do not use Retin-A or other retinoid products for at least 1 week prior to electrolysis treatment. Discontinue Accutane for at least 6 months prior to electrolysis.

Electrolysis Post-Treatment Instructions

1. In order to minimize the risk of infection, avoid touching or scratching the area that was treated.
2. Do not use soap or alcohol on the treated area for 24 hours. Cleanse the skin with a mild antiseptic such as witch hazel.
3. Do not wear make-up over the treated area for 24 hours.
4. You may experience some redness and swelling after your treatment. Use of a cold compress can reduce redness and soothe the skin.
5. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds for 72 hours after treatment. Your skin protects itself against UV rays by producing pigment. If your skin is injured or traumatized it can produce excessive amounts of pigment, resulting in hyperpigmentation (dark spots).
6. Do not swim in a chlorinated pool for the first 48 hours after treatment.
7. Do not take hot showers or sit in a hot tub for the first 48 hours after treatment.
8. If having the axilla treated, do not wear deodorant for 24 hours after treatment.
9. If small scabs appear, do not scratch them off. Scarring may occur.
10. Since hair follicles are most effectively treated when the hair first emerges from the skin, it is recommended that initial appointments are scheduled every 1-2 weeks.
